LHC start-up date announced
Posted by Adam Yurkewicz on 07 Aug 2008 at 10:05 am
It was just announced that the LHC startup date is September 10. This means
“the first attempt to circulate a beam in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will be made on 10 September”.
The energy of the beam will be 450 GeV. It will be an exciting day for sure, and should be followed in 1-2 months by the most exciting day, when we get the first proton-proton collisions. This will be between two beams of 450 GeV each. Then, the acceleration system will be commissioned to bring the beam energies up to 5 TeV each.
This coming weekend, protons will be injected into one section of the LHC as a test of transfering the beam from the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) accelerator into the LHC.
From the ATLAS side of things, we are starting 24-hour-a-day staffing of the control room just before this September date as well. We are finally entering the LHC era…

Hi, May any of you explain where this theroy about the earth blowing up or being sucked into a black hole came from? Did it come from you guys?
Two days shy of being a birthday present for me. . . Curses!
Keep in mind “Murphy’s Law” and lets hope no one gets killed.
GOOD LUCK.

Until I don’t see the data, I don’t believe that it’s work,
,
the software use to setup the grid is crap, only a physic work at CERN or INFN can believe that it’s work.
To many wrapping around Condor [WMS], a sylly database that have wait 1 year to get in the CERN code the patch to that have to do[LFC with ACL].
The “code write” are programmer that nmust retry K&R C is old
sys admin that not know howto HA service and tuning Java application.
No change to use automatic update on Running Cluster[ site ], every time that the system update it’s crash, that meaning that no
Quality Assurance make it’s work.
The developer have in charge the creation of Protocol [ i.e. SRM ] and also the manage of central repository.
So much money to understand what ? the “Lord Nibbler” product >;)
Moreover the experiment should be repetable, with which kind of Grid, I can believe that is possible

What does “acceleration system will be commissioned” mean? A little more for “laypeople” would be helpful.
>What does “acceleration system will be commissioned” mean?
I can’t give you much on the technical details since I am not working on the accelerator. What is meant by “commission” in this field is always turning something on for the first time, finding any problems, and fixing them.
The main point here is that the protons will be made to collide at the same energy they have when they are put into the LHC, and then only later will they be accelerated to higher energies. It’s a good strategy to test out the pieces of the accelerator one at a time instead of all at once in order to be able to systematically understand any problems.
if u bulid it they will come… lol

I’m a SUNY Stonybrook Astrophysics graduate from 1986.
What do I tell my friends and students when they ask about the LHC producing dangerous black holes?
Remember, most folks have never heard of Bekenstein-Hawking radiation or an evaporating micro-singularity with a lifetime on the order of the “new Planck time” ~10−26 second.

You can check out the CERN safety web page:

Basically, anything CERN can do has occurred naturally for billions of years, for example in cosmic ray collisions in the atmosphere, without destroying the Earth.

i m vry exited about this LHC experement as it will led us explore many new theories and mysteries such as big bang theory
i m waiting for the results to this experement…….
but some of my friends are afraid of the risks of this experement………
if the black holes might form can they cause destruction
on earth
Dear Sirs,
Greetings!!!
My opinion regarding whether LHC should be experimented or not states that if there is any slightest possible threat to humanity on the planet existing, then the experiment should put off till proper techniques are at hand.
Thanks.

Oh man! I need to grab a few smokes and look at the sky. Guess we are in for some fire works. Wait you guys are not serious right? Well if you are then i am shit scared!
its the end of the world as we know it and i feel fine lol
i dont really know what to say cuz i aint no expert in particle physics if i’m alive tomorrow at this time i think it was a success
Hi Jas, Baldev, and everyone else,
The LHC is absolutely safe, or of course we wouldn’t run it. To learn more about why, see this web site:

Hi Jas, Baldev, and everyone else,
The LHC is absolutely safe, or of course we wouldn’t run it. To learn more about why, see this web site. (We’ve linked to that page before, but I’m happy to keep linking if it will get more people to take a look!)
Do you think that it will be a success?Mr. Baldev Singh seems confident, he is still giving out his telephone numbers!
Dear Seth have you considered the possibility of a malfunction or any miscalculation or any error we could’nt think of what then do you still assure the public that it is fully safe im just curious.:)
Hi Kiren. The experts who wrote the safety reports did their best to avoid errors that “we couldn’t think of” by keeping their assumptions as simple as possible and their models as general as possible — plus having them looked over by a number of people.
I absolutely assure the public that the LHC is completely safe. More importantly, the experts who wrote the safety reports assure you of the same thing!
P.S. Sorry for my duplicate comments, everyone. We’re having problems with our spam filter, and I don’t want to bother our site administrators — they have a lot of other things to work on to get ready for tomorrow!
I tell you this.. if i die.. ill day happy.. I have a good life , a girlfriend , friends , bla bla bla. And if we die.. ill be know in the entire hell by being te idiot that ran inside the hole instead runing haha XD! Bring it up
i wanna see the HOLES ;p
Hi Seth do you have a specific time when the experiment will start if yes. can we see it. will it be telecasted
how long will the experiment last?
Dear, Seth ; Im a bit scared, in case the world DOES end :-O
But, I hope it goes a sucsess, since they’ve done it before .. havent you?
